Why You Shouldn’t Be Self-Confident

Last year, when I was a contestant in an international speech competition, people would often come up to me after the presentations. Some thanked me for the message. Some gave advice, and others admired my self-confidence. Self-Confidence? I thought.

I had little self-confidence, but I had complete confidence in God. Faith will produce spiritual confidence that far outweighs self-confidence.

Find Spiritual Confidence in Jesus

I remembered my pre-Jesus days when I lacked any confidence. My dysfunctional childhood caused me to mistrust people; I became an insecure and fearful woman. I believed I was a mistake. I had little hope and desperately needed a reason for existence. Then, I met Jesus.

When I gave my life to Christ, I found my value in Him. Days were no longer an evolution of random events. God had a plan. I found someone I could trust—that gave me spiritual confidence.

Why You Shouldn’t Be Self-Confident

Self-confidence leaks! We’ve all seen tabloids, watched biographies or media stories that revealed the insecurities of famous and accomplished people. Self-confidence isn’t sustainable, and it creates false security. We may temporarily feel confident when we’re in control, but changing circumstances, objecting opinions, and misfortune can decimate self-confidence.

The echoes of past failures can trigger insecurity. Present situations can seem unstable. The future, with its many unanswered questions, can cause us to feel extremely vulnerable. Self-confidence isn’t sustainable because “self” isn’t enough. Our trust doesn’t belong in “self” but in God. Sustainable confidence is knowing Jesus.

Spiritual Confidence is an Ongoing Journey

I wish I could say there’s a quick path to spiritual confidence. I will say, however, the time you spend feeling insecure can lessen. Our Comforter, The Holy Spirit, can help us recognize when we’re slipping into “self.” It’s a process of awareness, redirecting our attention back to God, and allowing Him to renew our minds.

Spiritual Confidence Can Begin Today

What are you currently facing? Could you use a little spiritual confidence? These scriptures can help you redirect your focus, and find peace.

Confident We Are Forgiven and Accepted by God

Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.

Colossians 1: 22 New Living Translation

Confident We Can Enter God’s Throne Room

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 4:16 NLT

Confident to Live the Plan God Designed for Us

“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses so that the power of Christ can work through me.

2 Corinthians 12: 9 NLT

Don’t Throw Away Your Spiritual Confidence

Every time I speak in front of people, write a blog post, or tackle unexpected obstacles it’s not because I feel courageous; it’s because I found my brave in Jesus. (Childlike faith for God-sized living). I know God has my back. Whatever the outcome, I’m confident it has eternal benefit.

Don’t throw away your spiritual confidence by letting “self” get in the way. When you put your trust in God, you’ll spend less time controlling your situation, and more time recognizing God’s hand in the midst of your situation.

So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.

Hebrews 10:35-36 NLT
