By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way

and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.”

 Exodus 13:21 New International Version

The Bible is full of true stories proving God guides ordinary people like you and me. But, what does it mean to be led by God in the 21st century? How do we recognize God’s direction?

Moving forward with Godly assurance isn’t easy, but God loves to drop reassuring signs along the way. Our journey may be different, but it will have the unmistakable stamp of God.

Here are five ways God assured our family to move forward and begin a new adventure.

Our family moved from California to Nevada fourteen days ago. It was a life-changing experience. Everything was new and different. The familiar was behind us, and the unfamiliar was ahead. But, one thing that remained constant was the presence of God.

We didn’t have a cloud by day or fire by night to help us navigate our course, but we had God’s Spirit unfolding His plan, and we knew He would remain faithful throughout His plan.

My prayer was to know God’s direction before my husband and I uprooted our family. It would be a huge change for my twenty-six-year-old daughter, her bustling toddler and of courses my ninety-five-pound yellow-lab, Charly.

Last August, I decided to schedule an hour of uninterrupted daily prayer. I wanted to give God my entire attention to hear His will. Do we move, Lord?

I wasn’t going to relent until God answered in an unpredictable, humanly impossible specific manner. Have you ever needed a specific prayer answered?

Every morning, I met with God at 4:00 a.m. with a huge container of coffee and a seeking heart. One word that God impressed throughout the month was “return.”

I knew what God meant. I needed to put Him first and return with a wholehearted trust. To return meant I had to leave something behind–fear.

My husband and I knew in our hearts it was time to move, but the practical funds weren’t available. It would cost more than we had in our savings. But God wanted us to “return” with complete trust.

It wasn’t long before my husband approached me with unexpected news, “You’ll never guess who was on the phone,” he began. “Apparently, I have an old IRA account that I forgot to close over thirty years ago,” he continued. “We have about four thousand dollars coming in the mail,” he announced.

I immediately knew this was my unpredictable, humanly impossible, specific answer. It was the confirmation I needed to boost my faith and quiet my heart with peace.

We were finally ready for our two-day trip to Nevada—in the rain. My husband drove a 26’ U-haul truck while I drove my daughter, granddaughter and Charly in my Jeep. My husband tightly fastened a waterproof roof storage bag for our luggage and baby equipment.

When we arrived at the hotel, my husband was hours behind because of the rain. I knew I was too short to unload the luggage from the roof bag. I silently prayed, Lord, I need help unloading this stuff.

The parking attendant offered to help and carefully untied the storage bag and unloaded everything under the hotel portico to keep everything dry. Then, he became our bellhop and dragged the heavy luggage rack to our room. His name was Jesus. (No, I’m not kidding.)

The next day we continued our journey and made it to our new home. We decided to split the immediate “to do” list. My husband wanted to unload the truck while we bought groceries and a few essentials.

I didn’t want to leave Vince alone unloading furniture and boxes. I went online to see if I could find help, but it was Sunday–everything was closed. Lord, he needs help unloading the truck, I prayed.

“Go ahead and get the shopping done,” Vince said. “I’ll be fine.”

When we came back from the store, he was done. “You’ll never believe what happened, Marisa.”

Someone had driven by and asked if he needed help. The man was a professional mover who finished a job down the street. He was eager to help Vince, and he had professional moving equipment. They finished in record time.

What are the odds a professional mover would drive by our street in a guard-gated subdivision, on a Sunday afternoon, at that specific time?

God didn’t need a cloud or a pillar of fire. He used 21st-century resources with a few angels along the way.

So, where is God leading you? Has He led you with an unpredictable, humanly impossible, specific answer to prayer? I’d love to hear your story in the comment box.

God is the author of our lives. Pray specific prayers and expect specific answers. You’ll begin to recognize the unmistakable stamp of God along the way.

Have a blessed weekend.
